The mission of the Leadership North Carolina Program is
to
inform,
develop and engage committed leaders by broadening their
understanding of and involvement in issues and
opportunities facing our state.
The program is aimed at persons who have demonstrated
community and professional leadership experiences.
Six monthly, two-day sessions give class members a broader
understanding of the State, with a focus on issues in the
topical areas of: Economic Development, Education,
Environment, Government/Politics, and Health/Human
Services. Participants learn about the critical
issues in these areas through discussions with top
officials of the state, professionals in the areas, field
trips and experiential activities. The program
cultivates a network of citizens with diverse backgrounds
and experiences who represent the many geographic areas of
the State and who are committed to volunteer service.
Leadership
North Carolina is a non-partisan 501(c)(3) tax-exempt
organization.
Program
Format
The program has six, two-day monthly Sessions held
between October and May. The Sessions are held in six
different cities across the State. The application
period for the 2008-09 program year will open in May
2008.
Participants
Open to all citizens of the State, LNC seeks a class of
approximately 50 leaders who represent the various geographic
regions and communities of the State from the public,
private and non-profit sectors. Special effort is made
to ensure diversity among class members (race, gender,
geography, occupation, stage of career, etc.). The
Program is not geared toward any particular age range -
classes typically consist of persons in their 20's through retirement.
Selection
Characteristics of a successful applicant include:
commitment, motivation, and interest to serve the State;
demonstrated voluntary leadership in community affairs;
desire and willingness to seek key volunteer and/or
appointed leadership roles; an occupational commitment
to remain in the State; and long-term commitment to play
a personal role in helping to shape North Carolina's
future.
Participant
Expectations
Participants must have the full support of their
employer. Attendance at each session is expected; those
who fail to fulfill the attendance requirements are
asked to withdraw. Attendance at the full Orientation
Retreat is mandatory; the remaining five Sessions each
consist of 5 "segments" (morning and afternoon
of both program days, plus the main class dinner) for a
total of 30 segments during the year. Participants
missing more than six segments are withdrawn from the
program - there are no excused absences. Once a
participant has accepted an offer of admission to the
Program and paid tuition, there are no refunds for any
reason.
Tuition
Tuition for the 2008-09 Class will be $3,900 (this is less than half of
what it would be without generous corporate, foundation,
and individual support.) Tuition is due upon
notification that you have been accepted into the
program, and must be paid in full at least one month
prior to the Orientation Session to avoid cancellation. Most meals are included (breakfasts are continental), but participants are responsible for
travel and lodging costs (out-of-town participants are
encouraged to stay in the "base" hotel
selected by Leadership North Carolina for each Session -
this is required for the Orientation Session).
Scholarships
Scholarship funds are available to provide partial, need-based scholarships to
candidates who expect to bear some or all
of the program costs personally. No full scholarships
are offered. Instructions on requesting a Scholarship Application
Form can be found in the
Application
Info section of this site during the
active Application Period each year.
Program
